Playing

How do I play?

Guess the five-letter word in six tries. Each guess must be a real word. After each one, the tiles change colour: green for a letter in the right spot, amber for a letter in the word but in another spot, and grey for a letter that isn’t in the word.

Try a round on the home page, or open How to play in the app’s Settings.

How many words are there?

2,640 levels, easier words first, and no daily limit. There’s also a Daily Word: the same word for everyone each day, with its own streak and stats.

What is hard mode?

Turn on Hard mode in Settings for more of a challenge: every letter you’ve found must be used in your later guesses, and any in the right spot must stay there.

I find green and amber hard to tell apart

Turn on High-contrast tiles in Settings. They use orange and blue instead of green and amber. Every tile and key also tells VoiceOver and TalkBack what it is.

Can Vocably remind me to play?

Yes, if you’d like it to. In Settings, Reminders can nudge you after 3 days away, or every day at a time you pick. They’re scheduled on your device, and they’re off until you turn them on.

How do leaderboards work?

They’re off until you turn them on, from Stats or Settings. Then your three best scores (words learned, best win streak and best daily streak) go to Game Center on iPhone and iPad, or Google Play Games on Android. Turn them off at any time in Settings.

Hint credits and purchases

How do I get hint credits?

You start with 10. You earn one for every 5 wins and one for each Daily Word you finish, and achievements earn a few more. Packs of 50, 150 or 300 are an optional purchase in the app.

Learning never costs a credit: once a game is over, the word’s meaning, details, pronunciation and review are free.

I bought a pack, but the credits didn’t arrive

Credits are added as soon as the store confirms the payment. If it’s waiting for approval, as with Ask to Buy, they arrive once it’s approved. If they still haven’t arrived, close Vocably and open it again: the store hands over any purchase that wasn’t finished. If that doesn’t help, email us with the store’s order number.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by the store you paid: Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com, or Google Play from your order history.

Will my credits move to a new phone?

Credits are kept on your device and in its backups. The store can’t restore them, so they’re lost if you delete the app without a backup. Restore your new phone from an iCloud or Google backup to bring them, and your progress, with you.

Your progress and your data

I played the first Vocably. Where is my progress?

This Vocably was rebuilt from scratch, with new meanings, a Daily Word, review and more, and everyone starts afresh. Progress from the first version isn’t carried over.

How do I start over?

In Settings, Reset progress deletes every game you’ve played, with your stats, streaks, achievements, favourites and review words, and starts the levels again in a new order. Your hint credits and settings are kept. It can’t be undone.

Does Vocably need the internet?

No. Every word is on your device, and the game works offline. Buying credits and leaderboards use the App Store, Google Play, Game Center or Google Play Games when you use them.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone and iPad with iOS 16 or later, and Android phones and tablets with Android 11 or later.

What do you know about me?

Nothing. There’s no account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Read the privacy policy for what stays on your device, and what leaderboards send if you turn them on.

Where do the meanings come from?

Definitions are adapted from Open English WordNet, many of them rewritten in plain words of our own, and pronunciations come from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary. Spotted a meaning that’s wrong or unclear? Email us the word.
